Councillor calls public meeting over Firwood Road pool

The municipal pool has been closed since July 2017.

ANGER and frustration is deepening over the continued closure of Firwood Road swimming pool in Effingham.

The municipal pool was closed in July 2017 with the City hoping to attend to a leakage problem which had affected residents on Falkirk Avenue, directly behind the pool.

However since then, there has been little or no movement leaving residents fed-up and frustrated.

Now, ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, has called a public meeting over the closure of Firwood Road swimming pool.

Maharajh said he had been contacted by several residents who have voiced their frustrations on the issue.

“It’s deeply frustrating because there is no word from the City as to when the pool will be re-opened. Residents are stuck with a construction site and a job that doesn’t seem to be moving towards completion,” Maharajh said.

“Numerous meetings with officials of the pool were held to date without any positive progress or feedback. Like the residents I say enough is enough. The community are demanding answers. I want to see the pool repaired and opened before the end of this year as the children in the area have been denied access over the past holiday periods as the pool was dug up but no repairs were undertaken.”

The public meeting will take place in the car park outside Firwood Road Swimming Pool at 9.30am on Saturday, 9 March to discuss the way forward regarding the opening of the pool.
