Effingham Mosque set ablaze in alleged arson attack

The local place of worship was targeted just after midnight.

AN Effingham Mosque,  the Faizane Mariam Masjid was petrol bombed in an alleged arson attack at 12:40am on Monday, 25 February.

In a statement released at 6am on Monday, the Effingham Islamic Society Trust  said the Mosque was the target of the arson attack.

 

“The Masjid was set alight by arsonists resulting in significant fire damage. Law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the matter and more information will be released as it becomes available. We ask for calm as the case is investigated and the perpetrators brought to book,” said the statement.

Greenwood Park SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Vincent Mthembu confirmed that a case of arson was opened at Greenwood Park SAPS.

“There are two rooms that are very badly burnt. At this stage we do not know who is responsible for the attack. A man was staying inside the mosque when he heard a bang on the window and woke up to find the mosque on fire. I encourage the mosque members to be calm and allow the investigation to take place. I urge anyone with information to call the station on 031 5716512 and report it to us,” said Mthembu.
