AN Operation Pakisa raid conducted by SAPS, SARS, Customs, Immigration Officers and Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries was carried out on Thursday, at a business premises on Dr Pixley Kaseme Street (West Street) in Durban.
KZN police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala said a 28-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of abalone, line fish, east coast rock lobster, oysters, mussels, langoustines, crabs and prawns.
The estimated street value of the items seized is approximately R86 000.
“A search was also conducted at another shop where more abalone was recovered. They were found packed inside a fridge at the business premises. The total estimated value of the recovered abalone is R72 840. The suspect will be charged in terms of the Marine and Living Resources Act,” she said.
The arrest comes two weeks after SAPS working with the North Coast Anti-Poaching (NCAP) unit intercepted two suspects in Richards Bay who had an illegal haul of more than 900 prawns in their possession.
