Excess birds from Umgeni Bird Park up for sale

According to the City, the Umgeni River Bird Park currently keeps a lager stock of various birds species and they continue to breed resulting in an increase in stock numbers.

THE Umgeni River Bird Park now falls under the eThekwini Municipality’s Parks Recreation and Culture Unit and will be amalgamated with Mitchell Park Zoo.

The park was under a three year management contract with Top Administration Services while Mitchell Park Zoo is managed by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Unit. In a statement the City said the resolution was reached in a meeting held yesterday. “This is in line with the Executive Committee resolution dated 15 May 2018 which recommended the approval of Umngeni River Bird Park amalgamation with Mitchel Park Zoo under Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit,” they said in the statement.

The went on to say that there would be no job losses as all personnel will be transferred from Top Administration Services PTY LTD into eThekwini Municipality through section 197 of the Labour Relations Act.

What’s more, the committee chaired by Councillor Zama Sokhabase, announced that the excess birds from the popular Bird Park will be sold.

“In order not to contravene the legal requirements of keeping certain number of birds as per cage size, the committee approved the sale of excess birds to potential buyers,” said Councillor Sokhabase. 

“Umgeni River Bird Park currently keeps a lager stock of various birds species and they continue to breed resulting in an increase in stock numbers. The birds will be sold to potential buyers and the proceeds of the sale will be used to purchase additional birds required at the Umngeni Bird Park,” the statement read.
