Gateway jewellery store robbed by armed men

Five men, three of whom were armed with pistols ransacked the jewellery store on Saturday evening.

A GATEWAY jewellery store was robbed by men armed with pistols on Saturday evening. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, a group of five men forced their way into the jewellery store.

“The suspects broke the front glass window of the store and stole several items of jewellery and several watches. The value of the jewellery taken by the suspects is unknown at this stage. A case of burglary has been opened,” said Deokaran.

Gateway’s marketing manager, Michelle Shelley, confirmed the incident had taken place.

“The robbery took place at a jewellery store after trading hours on 9 February. The perpetrators made off with an undisclosed amount of merchandise. No tenants or customers were harmed during the incident. The mall’s security as well as the South African Police Service (SAPS) immediately responded to the scene.

“The safety and security of our shoppers and tenants is of utmost importance to Gateway and they are working with the SAPS to assist in this investigation,” she said in a statement.

No arrests have yet been made.
