Giffy’s mural brings Durban North substation to life

Giffy Duminy, an artist was recently commissioned by Enviro Fixers-Durban North to spray paint the mural.

ARTIST Giffy Duminy recently spray painted the finishing touches on a blossoming mural on an electricity substation on Kenneth Kaunda Road (Northway).

The 25-year-old was commissioned by Enviro Fixers-Durban North, who are a group of people uplifting and beautifying Durban North. The group also safeguards the environment by replacing alien invader plants with indigenous plants.

“A lady by the name of Rayne Dancaster from Enviro Fixers contacted me about the project. They had commissioned it and had been in contact with the municipality to ask for permission. They had identified this particular substation which had graffiti tags all over it.

“They had said they would be planting flowers and plants in the gardens on either side of the substation. So I decided to use plants they were planting  in the vicinity and spray painted them on to the substation,” he explained.

The species planted includes indigenous plants, erythrina humeana and chlorophytum saundersiae.

Duminy said he was working on other exciting projects in the area and added the feedback from residents had been pleasing.

“Initially when I started I think a few people were suspicious that I was defacing the substation but as the project began to take shape I had people driving by hoot in appreciation. Since the piece has been completed loads of people have taken photos with the mural and tagged me on Instagram which has been really awesome,” he said.
