Residents warned of ‘TV licence’ scam

The scammers knock on residents' homes claiming to be officials inquiring about TV licences.

COMMUNITY members are being warned of a new scam targeting residents in the area. According to a Greenwood Park police press statement, there are individuals posing as SABC officials who going around robbing unsuspecting residents.

The statement says the scammers knock on residents’ homes claiming to be officials inquiring about TV licences.

The station’s spokesperson Vincent Mthembu said, “Don’t trust anybody who comes in your house without any arrangement made between you and his/her company prior. Once they gain access to your home they will rob you.”

Mthembu said residents should not even open the gate for anyone claiming to be an official without credible proof.

“We also advise you to contact the police or security personnel as soon as a person of this nature approaches you,” said Mthembu.
