Durban North/uMhlanga CPF youth desk to tackle social issues

The initiative was established as a sub-forum for the youth within the CPF with the primary aim of getting the next generation actively involved in joining the fight against crime.

THERE is renewed energy within the Durban North/Umhlanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) as the CPF Youth Crime Prevention Desk has been rekindled and re-established.

The initiative was established as a sub-forum for the youth within the CPF with the primary aim of getting the next generation actively involved in joining the fight against crime and violence as well as to building a culture of learning, tolerance and respect for all.

Shannon Naylor of the youth desk, said their main aim was to spread the message to schools in the area.

“I think the idea behind the Youth Desk is fantastic. This forum is sorely needed because I think it’s important to have a platform for the youth. We have a great team who work on implementing programmes and projects to educate the youth. One of our focuses is to implement mini-youth desks within schools in the area,” Naylor explained.

Fellow Youth Desk representative, Michelle Yates, said as a young mother, she felt a desire to help her community.

“I’m a member of North Durban Victim Support Team and as a mother, I’m passionate about taking the CPF’s message to the youth. I feel a lot of us still understand what the youth go through today due to our ages,” Yates said.

Another member of the youth desk, Brandon Kayat, said he believed the youth desk was also a bridge between the police and the youth.

“I think there is a perception that the police are the enemy in some cases which we know is not true. So for me I see the CPF youth desk as the middle ground providing a link between the youth and the police and improving perceptions and relations,” he said.
