Club mourns death of cyclist in M4 accident

Craig Diedricks succumbed to his injuries following an accident on the M4 on Sunday morning.

THE cycling community in Durban is in mourning after a cyclist was killed in an accident on the M4 on Sunday morning.

Craig Diedericks was part of a group of seven riders from the Cycle Specialists Cycling Club riding in a southerly direction on the M4 Ruth First Highway when tragedy struck.

It is alleged a taxi overtaking a vehicle ploughed into three cyclists critically injuring Diedericks. The Redhill resident later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Vice chairman of the cycling club, Aroon Patel said his team were in mourning following the incident which saw two other cyclists injured in the collision.

“Craig had the most amazing heart, he was always willing to share his time with cyclists new to road cycling. I still cannot believe this has happened because all the rules of the road were adhered to. We have suspended our club riding activities as a mark of respect for him and to mourn with his family. As a cycling community we are hurting,” he said.

Patel said the club would plan a memorial ride following Diedericks’ funeral on Friday.

The accident comes two months after five cyclists from the Batsalani Cycling Club were injured in a hit-and-run on the M4 near the Sibaya Circle.
