Scammers target students seeking NSFAS funding

In a statement the scheme reiterated that it will no longer be communicating directly with students via SMS during the 2019 academic year.

THE National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has warned students to be extra vigilant as scammers are out to get them. The funding scheme said unidentified attackers are posing as NSFAS representatives, sending out emails requesting applicants/students to update their account information.

“They claim that students can update their information by clicking on an embedded link. We would like to warn all to be aware of these fraudsters and take extra care when dealing with personal info online/phone,” said NSFAS.

In a statement the Scheme went on to reiterate that it will no longer be communicating directly with students via SMS during the 2019 academic year.

“This is with immediate effect, and we advise students to only use the myNSFAS Online Self-Service Portal to view application status or any other information relating to funding. Any SMS messaging regarding funding received following this message will be from fraudsters and not NSFAS. We advise every student that NSFAS will never ask for your account details, password, PIN or OTP over the phone or via email,” NSFAS said.
