VIDEO-Abby has the kindest cut for CANSA

The La Lucia Junior Primary learner hopes her hair donation will help cancer patients.

GLENASHLEY resident, Abby Lloyd, made the kindest cut last week by donating more than 30 centrimetres of her hair to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) KZN. The La Lucia Junior Primary Grade 3 learner’s donation will go towards making a wig for cancer patients.

The nine-year-old said she wanted to help after hearing cancer patients lose their hair during chemotherapy.

“It took me just over a year to grow my hair and I’m very happy that I will be making a difference to someone else’s life. I would like to do this again next year and hopefully inspire others to do the same. I will continue doing it for as long as I can,” she said.

According to CANSA, hair needs to be at least 25 centimeters long for the association’s wigmakers to use.

Abby’s mother, Heidi, said she was incredibly proud of her daughter’s efforts.

“She lost her grandfather recently to cancer and we were talking about the effects of chemotherapy and when she heard about it she immediately said she wanted to help. I Googled about how to donate to the association and with this being the festive season, this donation took on added significance,” Heidi explained.

Abby’s ponytail was placed in a ziplock bag and donated to the CANSA care centre in Umbilo.

If you would like to get involved to donate your hair, contact the CANSA Durban office on 031 205 9525.
