Refuse collection disrupted in parts of north Durban

It is believed the disruption is due to strike action.

RESIDENTS of North Durban have been left with waste on the pavements for more than two weeks following a disruption in rubbish collection. It’s believed the disruption is due to a strike action by members of the Durban Solid Waste (DSW).

According to uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, several residents have voiced their dissatisfaction about the refuse collection disruption.

“I know a few complexes in my ward have hired private contractors to come collect the rubbish but not everyone can afford that. It’s unfair on the residents as they pay rates for Durban Solid Waste to collect refuse. It’s particularly concerning with the heat as the rubbish has started to decompose and cause a massive stink in some areas. This particular problem has lasted more than two weeks. I’ve spoken to the deputy city manager who said they are trying to resolve the strike action,” he said.

Areas affected include uMhlanga, eMdloti, Mount Edgecombe, La Lucia, Glen Anil, Cornubia Verulam, Waterloo, Canelands, Mountview, Trenance Park and Parkgate to name a few.

According to eThekwini’s acting head of communications, Mandla Nsele the Municipality is working around the clock to resolve the situation.

“We are confident that this matter will be resolved soon. Affected residents and businesses are urged to keep all refuse within their property boundaries to avoid litter from spreading all over. Residents will be informed when the normal refuse collection resumes. The Municipality regrets any inconvenience caused,” he said.
