Durban North man scammed out of R5 000

Durban North SAPS said they were increasingly seeing more cases of people being defrauded online.

DURBAN North police have opened a case of fraud after a man was duped out of R5 000 in an online scam. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the victim, had advertised his XBox gaming console for sale and was contacted by a potential buyer.

“The suspect said he had deposited the money into the victim’s account and then sent a deposit slip which allegedly confirmed the payment had gone through. The seller had then handed over the item to the suspect. It subsequently turned out the suspect had used a fake deposit slip and had made off with the console. He has since tried to contact the number given but there was no answer,” Deokaran said.

Deokaran said they were increasingly seeing more cases of people being defrauded online.

“This is the eighth incident this year where someone has been scammed online. We are warning residents to be wary in situations like this. If it seems too good to be true, in most cases it is,” he said.
