Schoeman reflects on successful 2018

Northglen News talks to Henri Schoeman about his successful 2018 triathlon campaign.

IT has been a busy and successful year for Durban North’s Henri Schoeman. In April Schoeman won South Africa’s first Commonwealth Games gold in the Men’s Triathlon and he would then go on to pick up a number of podium finishes in the SuperLeague Triathlons in Mallorca and Malta where he finished third and second respectively.

The event in Malta was particularly memorable for Schoeman as he took on a traditional Maltese rowing boat.

“The regatta is a race in Malta every year where people race each other with handmade boats. It just happened to be around the same time as when we were there so as a part of the super league community projects, the swim leaders got to race the boats,” Schoeman explained.

Despite the boat winning, Schoeman said the experience was amazing.

“The guy I raced was super competitive so I had to swim pretty hard but in the end he beat me. It was a pretty cool experience,” he said.

Schoeman said this year has been a fruitful one for him and he hopes that trend continues in 2019.

“This year has really been a very good year for me competition wise and it’s good preparation leading into Olympic qualification. I’m hoping next year will be the same,” he said.
