uMhlanga councillor urges residents to recycle

Heinz de Boer's call follows the decision by several contractors in the recycling programme to stop collecting orange bags.

UMHLANGA ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, has urged residents to continue recycling despite the halting of the collection of orange bags. His call follows the decision by several contractors in the recycling programme to stop collecting recyclables.

Speaking to Northglen News last month, one of the contractors said this was because of the City’s failure to provide the orange bags.

The orange bag programme which began in 2007 was a way for the City to reduce the waste at landfill sites and promote recycling, thus protecting the environment.

“Since October I’ve fielded a number of complaints from residents who are fed up with the programme. While I agree the City has let them down terribly, I urge them to continue recycling items and possibly take them to buy back centres in and around the City.

“There are number of buy back centres that could help including one in KwaMashu. Recyclable materials that you can drop off there are bottles, cans, cardboards and paper,” he said.

De Boer also encouraged residents to identify the Glass Recyling Company’s glass banks in the area.

“The glass recycling company has a list of places you can drop off your glass items. If we do not act now we are eventually going to run out of landfill space and places to build new landfills sites,” he said.
