uMhlanga lifesavers help underprivileged school learners make waves

The club recently partnered with Solomon Mahlangu Primary School to help with a water safety and awareness development programme.

FOR the past five weeks, Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club has hosted 22 learners from the Solomon Mahlangu Primary School (formerly ML Sultan Blackburn Primary School) and helped them become water conscious.

The club has partnered with the Cornubia based school for the last few years with their water safety and awareness development programme.

Last week, the club’s programme culminated with a number of lifesaving style events on uMhlanga beach and a bit of bodyboarding in Grannies Pool.

Scott Sowman, longtime club member, said the learners started off in the pool where they were taught the basics of swimming and water safety.

“I think for many of the children, this has been a huge learning curve. Their confidence around water has also been boosted which is absolutely amazing. We started the programme in the pool where we taught learners about floating skills and then brought into the safety and awareness side.

“At the start some of the children didn’t want to put their heads under water but now they absolutely love it. With our final weekend of the programme we just spoke to the learners about where lifeguards were posted and what to be aware of if they were swimming in the ocean and it was great to see their smiles and their enjoyment with the various events we had lined up for them,” he said.

Sowman said they would continue to work with the school and said it was part of community upliftment.
