Post Office backlog finally cleared

The Post Office said it deeply regrets the strain and inconvenience that was caused to its customers during this period.

THE South African Post Office (SAPO) has announced that the mail backlog caused by strike action has finally been cleared.

In a statement SAPO said: “Domestic deliveries have been normalised to fall within regulated standards in the past week and these services are back to predictable daily conveyances to their destinations.”

SAPO’s CEO Mark Barnes added that SAPO staff worked tirelessly to ensure that the issues were resolved.

The Post Office said it deeply regrets the strain and inconvenience that was caused to its customers during this period. It has acknowledged that the initial time frame it communicated as its projected period within which it would resolve the backlog had not accurately anticipated.

Delivery fleets have been restored and SA Post Office has benefited from a capital allocation of R2.9bn to fund its operations and settle amounts owed to suppliers.

“SAPO has requested its branches to process all articles on receipt in order to expedite the issuance of automated collection notices to customers. The branches have also been mandated to hold uncollected items for longer periods and only return items to the processing hubs next year in order to afford customers a bigger collection window,” added the statement.

The processing of international mail has improved and the articles that are behind delivery schedules have reduced notably.

“We expect the processing of international items to be brought within standard once a number of interventions are fully implemented. We have designated a dedicated processing line to speed up the handling of smaller online shopping based items that constitute the bulk of the current international volumes on hand,” explained Barnes.

International items take longer to process as they have to be scanned to ensure that they do not contain contraband items and each incoming parcel has to be assessed for possible import duty.

SAPO has made permanent operational interventions in the delivery value chain to ensure quicker turnaround times.
