John’s double ton earns him first team call-up

The double century was John Grewar's first-ever in his cricketing career and he brought up the milestone on the last ball of his team's innings.

GLENHILLS resident, John Grewar recently scored a milestone double century for the Crusaders Cricket Club second team. His knock helped the club defeat Pinetown Cricket Club seconds in the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union second XI competition.

The 25-year-old who has spent a few years in the UK playing for Hampshire County Crikcet Club and Sale Cricket Club scored 200* (not out) and helped his side to post a mammoth 516/3 in the 50-over game.

Incredibly, this was Grewar’s first-ever double ton in his cricketing career and he brought up the milestone on the last ball of his team’s innings.

What is more, he became only the third person in Crusaders Cricket Club’s history to score a double century.

“You know it didn’t sink in then and it hasn’t sunk in now. Having said that, I’m very proud of my knock and to be part of a special and historical feat,” he explained.Grewar said he didn’t know he was close to the milestone if it wasn’t for former club chairman, Andrew Bennison.

“He kept shouting out 170, then 180, and I was trying to figure who he was shouting at until I reached the 190 mark and then it finally clicked. What was special for me was my parents watched me bat which was great because it had been a few years since they watched me play,” he said.

Since his double ton, Grewar has earned a call-up to the Crusaders first team, who have remained unbeaten this season in the Castle Premier League.

“The ‘Good Guys’ as the club is know has been super to me, there’s a great vibe among the team and it really helps with your confidence as a player. My goal going forward is to contribute to the team’s success and hopefully help them qualify for the Club Championships,” he said.
