Strings of change for Northlands Primary School

The donation was facilitated by the Pretoria Philharmonic Orchestra who donated the guitars to the cause following an appeal by the Rotary Club of Durban North.

THE Rotary Club of Durban North recently donated 20 guitars to the learners and staff at Northlands Primary School. Speaking to Northglen News club member, Vanessa Champion said the donation was facilitated by the Pretoria Philharmonic Orchestra who donated the guitars to the cause following an appeal by the club.

“The father of one of the music teachers at the school (Leah Riddle) and a fellow Rotarian from overseas was visiting us a while back and he mentioned about the school being in need of music equipment. We became good friends and the president of the club at the time, put out an appeal.

“That’s when the Pretoria Philharmonic Orchestra approached us and donated the guitars which was such a boost for the school,” she said.
Champion added the club had committed to donating more instruments to the school in the future.

Leah Riddle, who is part of the music department at the school said she was blown away by the donation.

“I don’t know how to put into words what the donation by the Rotary Club means to us. For myself and Candice (Sparks) who teaches music to the senior primary learners, this is making our dreams for the school become a reality which is so exciting. Music touches everyone’s hearts in different ways and unifies people and we are thankful,” she said.

Her words were echoed by fellow music teacher, Candice Sparks, who said she was grateful for the donation.

“We are so grateful to have the support of the Rotary Club of Durban North and to hear they will be supporting us in the future is absolutely amazing,” she said.
