uMhlanga SAPS station welcomes toilet donation

The Ablution Project, complete with a urinal, a toilet and sink was constructed by residents and other stakeholders over a two month period.

A NEW toilet was officially opened at the uMhlanga satellite police station last Friday after residents, businesses and stakeholders banded together to give back to the men and women in blue.

The Ablution Project, complete with a urinal, a toilet and sink was constructed by residents and other stakeholders over a two month period.

The project was initially spearheaded by Shaun Russouw of the Prestondale Neighbourhood Watch after he learned that police officers stationed at the satellite station had to travel to Gateway to use the toilet.

“There were toilets here before however they were in appalling condition and had stopped functioning a while ago. I spoke to my contacts within the watch and because I’m a member of the CPF, we were all able to collaborate with various stakeholders to bring the project to fruition. It was great to see how many people responded positively to help out the SAPS,” he said.

Haden Searles, chairman of the Durban North/uMhlanga CPF, said he was thrilled for the members of the satellite station.

“I’m absolutely thrilled. The project was done without anyone making demands or expecting anything out of it and that’s the whole ethos of the CPF, is supporting the community and the police service. I think it is important to point out this was not the SAPS’ fault but the department of public works which let the toilets go to rack-and-ruin. I was expecting just a tiny cubicle toilet but to see an actual structure with a toilet, a urinal and sink is great,” he said.

The uMhlanga satellite police station is open from Monday to Sunday from 6am to 6pm.
