Thieves smuggle goods stolen in Greenwood Park across the border, say police

In September, police arrested nine suspects in Pongola with a truckload of bikes and other goods stolen mostly in KZN.

AS the festive season draws closer, Greenwood Park Police have urged residents to be extra vigilant. According to the station’s spokesperson Sergeant Vincent Mthembu, they have noted a rise in motorcycle and garden tool thefts in the Durban North area.

Mthembu said, “There is a syndicate that is targeting power tools and transporting them to neighbouring countries. We have also noted with concern the rate at which motorcycles are being stolen in and around the area.”

He went on to say, as police, they believe that home owners should take extra precautionary measures to ensure that they do not fall victim to these crimes.

“In September,  our colleagues arrested nine suspects in Pongola with a truckload of bikes and other goods stolen mostly in KZN that was headed to one of the foreign country. These crimes are preventable.  We are urging residents not to leave their motorcycles and tools in open spaces where criminals can easily spot them,” he added.

Mthembu also highlighted that it’s important for residents to know all information about their belongings.

“We urge anyone who owns tools whether they’re kept in a van, garage or shed, to mark them and make a note of the serial numbers. This could be just by taking a photo of them but preferably by registering them on a national database, as this helps the police prove ownership when they make seizures of stolen items,” said Mthembu.
