Enter paradise in local’s La Lucia garden

As the country recently celebrated Garden Day, the Northglen News zoned in on Evans' garden of paradise.

ENTERING Carole Evans’ garden is akin to a paradise in the heart of La Lucia. Adorned by green hedges, beautiful spring-bright flowers and right in the middle a crystal blue swimming pool screaming ‘dive in’.

As the country recently celebrated Garden Day, the Northglen News zoned in on Evans’ garden of paradise. The La Lucia resident said she moved to her home just over a decade ago which was when she started began working her magic.

“When we came here it was all weeds and empty space. I had always loved gardening so when I spotted the land I knew that I could create something beautiful out of it,” she said.

Garden Day which was celebrated on Sunday, 20 October, is the day where gardeners down their tools and enjoy the fruits of their hard work. The celebration is open to anyone, regardless of age, gardening experience or the size the garden.

Evans said what has helped her maintain her ‘paradise’ is the help of her assistant who she says is always eager and willing to help.

“I have a very pleasant gardener who helps me care for this beautiful creation. Even though he’s not a professional, he is always going the extra mile to make sure we have an exceptional garden,” said Evans.

She is also part of the Umhlanga Rocks Garden Club which is a group of women who get together to share tips on how to improve their flowering skills. The club is open to women of all ages and religious background.

“The club has also played a huge role in polishing my skills. The ladies have become more like friends if I can put it that way. When I joined I received a warm welcome. I encourage all garden enthusiasts in the area to come and be part of this fun and exciting social,” added Evans.

Describing her time in the garden she said,”I find it therapeutic. It’s just lovely to work in creative areas and to enjoy planting flowers of each season. What’s even more fulfilling is looking at the rewards of your beautiful garden.”
