WATCH: Whale carcass washes up on uMhlanga Beach

The carcass had to be towed out of the water using a tractor.

OFFICIALS from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the eThekwini Municipality have finally removed the whale carcass from uMhlanga beach, just three days after it washed up near eMdloti.

The 15 metre long humpback whale carcass had been spotted off eMdloti on Sunday and was towed out to sea. However strong winds pushed the carcass back towards the shore, when it eventually washed up near uMhlanga on Monday morning.

Officials were able to finally remove the carcass from the shoreline on Wednesday around lunchtime and had to tow the mammal’s body out of the water using a tractor.

According to DeWet Geldenhuys of the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), the beaches between eMdloti and uMhlanga will remain closed for the time being.

“Ezemvelo and Ethekwini officials have been great in their endeavours to remove the carcass from the beach. The past few days have proved difficult to drag the whale from the shoreline due to rough seas. They are now using a digger to separate the whale into smaller pieces,” he explained.

He added the whale would be cut up piece by piece and loaded into skips bins, placed on the promenade, which will be taken away by the municipality.
