Durban’s recycling project stalls

In a statement the City has assured residents that even though they are experiencing difficulties, the programme is still up and running.

WHILE the City is struggling to appoint a recycling bag contractor, they have made alternative arrangements for residents to access the recyclable orange bags.

The City’s recycling programme has been on shaky ground since last year, after it emerged that due process was not followed when awarding a R90 million tender to supply the orange recycling bags.

In a statement the City has assured residents that even though they are experiencing difficulties, the programme is still up and running.

“The eThekwini Municipality Kerbside recycling programme is still running in the buyback / drop off centres around the city, however there is a challenge of the supply of orange bags which is due to the delays in the procurement processes,” said the City.

In April the City signed a two month agreement with Verigreen which was tasked with supplying the plastics.

Durban North resident Kim Whally said,”Now I’m not even sure what to do with all the recyclable garbage. Even when we do fill the plastics, no one comes to collect them.”

The statement went on to read,”DSW is currently awaiting finalisation of the SCM processes, prior to commencement of the orange bag supply to the residence. Communication will be sent to all residents once the orange bags are available.”

The eThekwini Municipality’s head of communications Mandla Nsele has further apologised to all those affected by the delay.

“We still encourage all our citizens to continue with the recycling and we wish to apologise to all affected citizens who are passionately involved with recycling for the inconvenience caused,” he said.
