Government launches cancer awareness campaign

With this campaign government aims to address the growing national health and socio-economic concern in the country.

GOVERNMENT has gone one step further towards accelerating access to health services, particularly cancer treatment. Today the Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and the MEC for Health in KwaZulu-Natal Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo will launch the National Cancer Campaign.

With this campaign, government aims to address the growing national health and socio-economic concern in the country.

It is also in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement in his State of the Nation Address this year that  “a huge cancer campaign similar to the HIV counselling and testing campaign” would be launched this financial year.

In a statement the department of health said, “The objectives of the campaign include, among others; creating awareness and educating the general public, patients, families, healthcare workers, etc. about various types of cancers together with risk factors, prevention methods, treatment services available and support during survivorship.”

The department went on to say,”Many cancers are preventable and can be successfully treated through early detection and timeous treatment, which reduces unnecessary suffering and financial strain on patients, families and the health system.”

The launch will be held in Pietermaritzburg.
