A month ago a disgruntled resident took to Facebook lambasting those littering on Durban beaches, particularly around the Blue Lagoon vicinity.

In a video that went viral, on social media, Gary Nilson said he had been observing the area for a while and has noticed that the littering was an on going habit.

“I finally reached my limit with the situation going on just north of Durban at one of our favourite spots to have a surf and brekkie, the Bike’n Bean. Let’s not make this about race or culture, this is about the lack of policing common bylaws in a public space,” he wrote.

Nilson blamed people who braai on weekends who he said leaves the place a mess.
This video also shows groups of people dancing and drinking. The video shows broken alcohol bottles and empty packets scattered all over the pristine beachside.

“The situation here is out of hand and this is now happening not just a few times a year but literally every weekend and even during the week on occasion. All I am hoping to do is to bring some pressure on the council of Durban to maybe start policing this area properly,” added Nilson.

But now the eThekwini Municipality’s head of communications, Mandla Nsele said they have already started implementing measures to curb this scourge ahead of the festive season.

“The Municipality’s Festive Season Management Committee (Fesmac) is in the process of finalising all festive season plans which include waste management. These plans will be unveiled during the festive season launch which will happen at a date that will be communicated with the media.

“The City and the Department of Environmental Affairs will also announce the plan and a service provider that will focus on litter collection from the sea, this will be done as part of the Ocean Day celebrations at the date to be communicated this month,” he said.
