WATCH: Don’t blink you might miss it

A Durban North nine-year-old can solve the Rubik's cube in less than 25 seconds.

MEET nine-year-old Sethu Xolo. The Glenashley Junior Primary learner solves the Rubik’s cube in under 25 seconds. If you think that’s impressive, the world record is four seconds. We don’t care though because Durban North’s very own Sethu is well on the path to breaking that record.

The grade three learner said he was only introduced to the cube six months ago.

“When I saw one of my friend’s fiddling with it I was intrigued and wanted to try it. After failing to solve it I surfed the internet, did research and tried to find ways around the square,” he said.

His primary focus is academics and everyday after completing his homework he watches videos of people solving the cube.

Founded by Ernő Rubik more than 40 years ago, the cube was aimed at simplifying three-dimensional geometry. It took its founder more than a month to solve it.

With more practise Sethu said he is working towards being the world’s record holder. He recently participated in the World Cube Association’s national competition which was held in Johannesburg. There he was named the association’s youngest competitor for competing in various categories namely: 2×2; 3×3; 4×4 and the Pyramix Rubik’s cubes. His average was 30 seconds, and his best time was 23 secs.

“My parents were very proud of the results. They also support me and encourage me to always do my best,” he said.

Glenashley Junior Primary School teachers said they were also proud of Sethu. His teacher Sam Rajsmus said, “I had to ban him from using it in class otherwise he wouldn’t concentrate on anything else. As teachers we are very proud of him. At my old age I still can’t solve the cube even if I dedicated most of my time to it.”
