Durban motorists warned against roadside parking

According to local police, there have been numerous incidents of motorists breaking road rules, especially in residential areas.

AS the festive season bells have started ringing, motorists are warned against landing on the wrong side of the law. According to local police there has been a scourge of motorists who break road rules especially in residential areas. Greenwood Park police said one of the most common offences is motorists obstructing traffic by parking on the side walk, partially blocking the road.

The station’s spokesperson, Vincent Mthembu said not only does this obstruct traffic but it also endangers the motorist’s vehicle.

“When you park on the side of the road your car is at risk of being broken into or even getting stolen. Roadside parking also makes you a target to hijacking criminals as they can monitor your movements making it easy to hijack you,” said Mthembu.

He further advised motorists to always be vigilant and take care of their belongings.

“Don’t leave the valuable items on the seat of the car because that might attract the criminals parsing by to break your vehicle. Be familiar with the environment and be constantly on the look-out for suspicious-looking characters or vehicles and do not hesitate to report them to the police,” he added.

Last Thursday, 4 October MEC for Transport in the province Mxolisi Kaunda officially launched Transport Month. He said the month will be used as phase one of ensuring safety on the province’s roads ahead of the holiday season.

“Our duty as the department and to citizens at large is to ensure that we remain steadfast in all our efforts to further reduce road crashes and fatalities. Let me reiterate that indeed, the power to change the mindset of all road users – including drivers of light and heavy vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists – rests with all of us. Drivers must adhere strictly to the rules of the road. Pedestrians and passengers must always remain vigilant, and exercise their right to speak out for their safety,” said the MEC.
