Frustrations deepen over Firwood Road pool’s lengthy closure
Lack of progress at municipal pool frustrates residents.
RESIDENTS are no closer to finding out when the Firwood Road pool in Effingham will reopen. The pool was closed last year in July to attend to a leakage problem which had affected residents on Falkirk Avenue, directly behind the pool.
However since then, there has been little or no movement leaving residents fed-up and frustrated. When Northglen News visited the site with local ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, several sections around the pool have been dug up, however, there seemed to be no progress in the repair work.
Greenwood Park resident, Anthony Feeke said the pool used to be a boon for the area.

“I used the pool when I was younger. My children who used to swim in the pool now have to go out of the area to the Durban North pool, which pales in comparison to what we had at Firwood. Now we have to travel out of the area just to access a pool, it’s extremely sad because this is one of the few Olympic sized pools in Durban.
“Firwood Road pool has served the community for a number of years and seeing it empty makes me angry and frustrated. Not a stone has been touched since the pool was drained, we pay our rates and for what? I feel the City has forgotten the community,” he said.
His words were echoed by ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh.

“It’s deeply frustrating because there is no word from the City as to when the pool will be re-opened. Residents are stuck with a construction site and a job that doesn’t seem to be moving towards completion, much like the Rachel Finlayson Pool on the beachfront,” Maharajh said.
