Resident lambastes illegal dumping

Local councillor Heinz de Boer said it is unfortunate that there are no law enforcement officers to arrest the culprits.

A CONCERNED uMhlanga resident and local business woman has urged locals to avoid doing things that could deter international guests from visiting in the area. Marcelle Raetzer Hold took to the community Facebook group Durban North Neighbours lambasting those illegally dumping their dirt next to her holiday apartment Zeranka Lodge on Cowrie Terrace in uMhlanga.

Speaking to the Northglen News, Hold said she has tried multiple avenues to have the matter sorted but to no avail.

“Most of my guests international. They use this path to walk to the beach. It’s so embarrassing when they have to step over rubbish and stuff. Even though I don’t own the property where the dumping is, I have pledged to maintain it because it’s really affecting our environment,” she said.

According to Hold, just over a year ago the property just off Forest Drive was almost like a night club. She says fortunately a boom prohibiting the public from entering was put up.

“Before the boom was put up people would come here to drink and do all kinds of things. We would find used condoms and bottles scattered all over. When the boom was installed as residents we thought it was the end of our problems, but little did we know,” said Hold.

Hold said on numerous occasions she has seen cars drive in to dump their rubble and speed off.

“I have been trying to call the City’s illegal dumping line but it just rings and rings. I even thought maybe they changed their numbers. I honestly think that whoever is responsible for this unhygienic habit is among us as residents because I can’t see how an outsider would have access beyond the boom,” said the disgruntled resident.

Local councillor Heinz de Boer said it is unfortunate that there are not even law enforcement officers to arrest the culprits.

“For as long as unscrupulous humans are around the social issues that besiege neighbourhoods won’t go away. It’s simply piggish behavior of those dumpers who won’t take the time or make the effort of correctly disposing of their waste that spoils it for everyone else. We simply don’t have enough law enforcement officers to control the dozens of green areas and servitudes in the area. And dumpers take advantage of this,” said de Boer.

Heinz both encouraged community members to report any illegal dumping to 080 311 1111.
