City intensifies clean up efforts

The clean-up initiative was in partnership with community volunteers, non-government organisations and various municipal departments.

IN an effort to spruce up certain wards, the City has been working with councillors to convert almost 100 illegal dumpsite into parks and food gardens.

The clean-up initiative, which was held in partnership with community volunteers, non-government organisations and various municipal departments, was in response to Mayor Zandile Gumede’s clarion call for councillors to lead by example and revamp their areas.

The latest clean up was held at the Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (INK) areas.

Coordinator of the INK Councillors’ Forum Sduduzo Khuzwayo said the clean-up aims to reignite the spirit of civil pride.

“When we realised that our spaces were not clean, especially in townships, where there was a lot of litter and dirt, we decided to act. We realised some of these illegal dumpsites were near people’s homes. We want to make these places green so that we can attract tourists.” He said many of the sites were health hazards,” he said.

Durban Cleansing and Solid Waste (DSW) Education Office Sandile Myende said, “These councillors are with us every step of the way during these clean-ups. Let’s plant trees, and beautify our environment. By doing this we will have the same parks as those in the suburbs where kids can play safely.”
