The Anchor of Hope Africa is a non-profit company passionate about seeing children empowered through literacy.

A LOCAL non-profit organisation needs help to fulfil their mission of improving literacy skills in underprivileged schools. The Anchor of Hope Africa is a non-profit company passionate about seeing children empowered through literacy.

The organisation founded in 2014, hosts literacy programmes, homework centres and library projects in schools around South Africa. This is done alongside equipping teachers, parents, and caregivers to create support systems for children to flourish.

Co-founder of the organisation and uMhlanga resident, Janine Massey said they are appealing to all communities to donate their time, books or any other resellable goods.

“Currently we’re working with two schools being Natest Primary School in Mount Edgecombe and Clayton Primary School in Overport. We employ native language matriculants who help us communicate with all students, making it easy to navigate through the English barriers. However because we are a non-profit organisation, sometimes funding is not on our side,” she said.

The organisation teaches children to read, write and improve on their language skills which has proven to be directly improving their academics. Much like a school the programmes test the learner’s progress by having regular assessments.

Massey said, “Our mission is to see children all over Africa empowered through literacy. We are just urging anyone who can donate to kindly do so. We’re making it easy for everyone to make a difference – through multiple different platforms and ways to get involved. You can choose to volunteer, sponsor a child, sponsor a school, support corporately or help us fund raise.”
