DURBAN North SAPS have once again urged motorists and residents to heed their warning of drinking and driving. This comes after 23 people were arrested for drunk driving on Friday evening on the M4.

The operation held by the station in conjunction with Metro Police has yielded positive results this year with more than 100 people arrested for drunk driving.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said despite warnings by police, the trend of drunk driving persisted.

“We’ve sent out several warnings but despite this drivers have still been breaking the law. We’ve arrested more than 100 people since the beginning of this year. Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanour, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice.

“We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.
