Breast cancer screenings can save your life

Statistics suggest that in South Africa at least one women in every 28 will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

October is almost upon us and with it comes breast cancer awareness. However, being aware of its possible symptoms and taking the necessary precautions should be something we do all year round. A significant number of South Africans are affected by the disease with statistics revealing that 1 in 28 women in South Africa will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

With this in mind it is comforting to know that the team of professionals at the North Coast Bone Density & Breast Care Centre Inc. are at hand to take each individual client through the process of breast cancer screening where early detection is known to save lives.

The Centre offers Full Field Digital Mammography and breast ultrasound for breast cancer screening on state-of-the-art equipment that delivers high resolution results with minimal discomfort to patients.

It is advised that, from the age of 40, women undergo screening mammography annually.

Any suspicion of a lump in the breast prior to this age requires medical assessment which will include an ultrasound examination of the breast.

Experts in the field report that annual screening is able to detect early lesions and in particular breast cancer, which results in minimal and less invasive treatments that have a high rate of success.

Just as important for women, in particular those nearing menopause and older, is a bone density examination. The Bone Density Unit based at the centre offers baseline screening for osteoporosis and the monitoring of the response to treatment.

The Centre, which is conveniently located on the first floor of the Square at 250 Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Umhlanga Ridge is also in close proximity to the Umhlanga Hospital and close to all major routes. Safe and secure parking is available.

Examinations are charged in accordance with medical aid tariffs. Appointments are essential and ensure a smooth workflow and no unnecessary waiting or delays.
