Jane’s passion is all about giving back

Jane Kilian uses her social media platforms to drive awareness on issues affecting women, abused or neglected animals, and the challenges facing the underprivileged.

JANE Kilian, also known as GI Jane, is instantly recognisable in any crowd by her purple hair, but it is her heart of gold that is making a difference to those in need. The Durban North resident who runs Secret Sunrise Durban, hosts various events through the year to raise funds for a number of charities. She also uses her social media platforms to drive awareness on issues affecting women, abused or neglected animals, and the challenges facing the underprivileged.

Secret Sunrise, which is akin to an early morning silent disco, is a global movement and platform to share positivity and get people grooving, celebrating and feeling united in joy. It’s one of the best ways to ‘share the joy and give back’ explains Killian.

“I’ve hosted several fundraisers this year for various charities including Project Dog, House of Love and Hope (HOLAH) and Puppy SOS. Secret Sunrise has become one of the best ways to reach the community. For me coming from a place of privilege and having a platform in which to influence others to make a change for those in need is extremely important.

“I think that’s why the secret sunrise events are such a success, they are the catalyst for change. A huge part of it is sharing the joy, being part of something greater and at the same time giving back. It gives you all the feels watching people’s faces light up at the events and knowing we are making a difference,” she said.

Kilian said her drive to make a difference stems from her mother, who is involved in various charity drives.

“My family and especially my mom are charity minded, so I was brought up in an environment where I could see what difference you can make to someone’s life. Whatever I do now I have a charity minded approach,” she said.

One of her other passions in life is also promoting body positivity and self-love.

“I’m embarking on an eight week course of a self love course because often times what we see on social media, especially Instagram, can be damaging to self esteems. So I’m all about driving home the message of being the best version of you without placing limitations on how you should look,” she said.
