Elderly uMhlanga resident assaulted in robbery

The suspects derailed the driveway gate to gain access to the home on Ridge Road.

A GANG of armed men stormed a home on Ridge Road on Monday night and held up the elderly homeowner. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the homeowner was hit in the face by the suspects.

The incident occurred at about 8.25pm.

“The gang, who were using a Ford Figo derailed the driveway gate to gain access to the home. The domestic worker was at home at the time and saw two of the intruders. She screamed in panic which alerted the homeowner, however by this time the suspects had gained access through the front door.

“The homeowner, believed to be in her 60s, was struck in the face by the suspects during the incident. They then demanded the occupants of the home lie on the ground. The suspects then ransacked the house stealing various items including jewellery and watches,” he said.

According to Deokaran, the suspects were reportedly wearing gloves and balaclavas.

This is the third armed robbery in the area in the space of a few days. On Friday night a gang of suspects robbed a home on Ridge Road following a similar modus operandi.

The incidents come a month after a brazen attempted robbery at a home also on Ridge Road.
