Tasneem nets SA squad selection

The Grade 11 learner who has represented South Africa in softball said this was just the start of a lifelong dream.

THERE’S no denying the sporting prowess of Tasneem Booley. The 16-year-old Northlands Girls’ High School was recently selected for the South African hockey team in the U16 age group.

The Grade 11 learner who has represented South Africa in softball said this was just the start of a lifelong dream.

“I was extremely proud to be selected for the squad and although we won’t be touring anywhere it’s given me huge motivation going forward. I want to keep going and improving and hopefully one day represent SA at a senior level,” she said.

Tasneem said her family have been her biggest fans and have always encouraged her to reach for the stars.

“Both my sister and brother have played hockey for KZN so when I was in primary school I would go down and watch them play. Watching them play made me want to emulate them and follow in their footsteps. My sister, Ziyaana, coaches me for softball and hockey at the school and she’s always encouraging me after practise and games. She pushes me to be my best and having her behind me is one of the reasons I am where I am today,” she said.

The Crusaders Hockey Club member said her goal was now to make the national U18 squad next year.
“I would love to be selected for the U18A or U18B team. I’ve just got to keep working towards my goals and improving on my game,” Tasneem explained.

While she represents Crusaders at a senior level, the Greenwood Park resident said playing school hockey is crucial for any player’s growth.

“I’m passionate about school sports and playing first team hockey for my school has taught me so much about teamwork,” she said.
