New bike club ignites passion for giving back

Northglen News recently caught up with some of the members to find out more about the club.

BROTHERHOOD, loyalty and respect, it’s the three founding principles of a new motorcycle club in north Durban. The members of East Coast Motorcycle Club share a common passion for motorcycles and the open road. Northglen News recently caught up with some of the members to find out more about the club.

Treasurer, Ravi Govender, said the members initially bonded over the bikes but as time went on, they formed a brotherhood that can only be defined as family.

“We are a biking family. Our motto is purposeful in that we want to be mentors to others, we want to identify and help the needy, we want to leave a legacy of being role models, and with all of that still enjoy our passion of riding our bikes and being bikers. We also want to change the way how we as bikers are perceived,” said Govender.

Pravesh Ramfol, said the club already boasts more than 25 members since its formation.

“We’ve grown by leaps and bounds since we began. I think the ethos of our club and our motto has really guided us to how we approach things. We have a common belief in brotherhood, loyalty and respect, our founding principles. Another aspect of the club is that we have identified those that are less fortunate so that we can find ways of making their lives just a little more comfortable,.” Ramfol said.

Sugan Moodley echoed his club members’ sentiments saying they also wanted to change perceptions of bikers.

“Its honestly encouraging to see so many bikers from different backgrounds stepping into the riding arena. Riding is an extremely social hobby despite the stereotypes of heavy burly men who are dangerous. But you’ll not find a bigger bunch of cuddly teddy bears than our group. Bikers generally are very friendly, charitable, and helpful. There is sense of family in the biking fraternity whereby everyone tries to help each other. I’ve always had a great reception from bikers wherever I go,” Moodley said.
