Armed suspects rob uMhlanga jewellery store

The suspects targeted a jewellery store on Chartwell Drive.

DURBAN North SAPS are looking for four suspects behind the brazen armed robbery of a jewellery store at the Protea Mall on Chartwell Road. The incident occurred at about 10.30am.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, two suspects entered the store pretending to be customers.

“According to eyewitnesses, one of the suspects in the store was dressed as a woman. The armed suspects then held up the staff and stole various items of jewellery, emptying out display cases. The suspects also pistol-whipped one of the staff members with a pistol striking over the head,” Deokaran explained.

The suspects who were using 9mm pistols then jumped into a getaway vehicle parked nearby.

“The suspects fled the scene in a Hyundai Elantra with an unknown registration. We believe two suspects were waiting in the getaway vehicle, one of whom was armed with a rifle,” he said.

According to Shaun Herbst of Netcare 911, the injured member of staff was taken to Umhlanga Hospital.

“The victim sustained moderate head injuries. The patient was treated on scene and transported by ambulance to hospital for further treatment,” he said.
