Tourists travelling to SA increase

More than nine per cent of the tourists were from China.

IN the month of June alone this year, 3 246 696 travellers passed through South Africa’s ports of entry. They were made up of 965 403 South African residents and 2 281 293 foreign travellers.

The foreign arrivals, 1 160 094 were made up of 69 850 non-visitors and 1 090 244 visitors.
That’s according to Statistics SA’s June’s tourism and migration report.

The report also found that tourists increased by 2,9 per cent from 708 978 in June 2017 and overseas tourists (149 791) decreased by 1,3 per cent from 151 736 in June 2017. “Among the top 10 countries, the largest increase, 9,2 per cent was for tourists from China, followed by the UK, 3,3 per cent  (from 19 072 in June 2017 to 19 694 in June 2018),” the report read.

About 545 905 of tourists used road transport and 183 428 used air transport, while a smaller number, 41 used sea transport.
The majority of tourists, 706 104 were on holiday compared to 19 352, 3 445 and 473 who were in South Africa for business, study purposes and for medical treatment respectively.
