Khabazela soup kitchen makes a difference

The kitchen serves between 60 and 80 children living in the township.

THE township of Khabazela Village lies a mere 14 kilometres from the affluent suburb of Sunningdale, and the differences are stark. Large homes are replaced with small RDP homes, access to running water is restricted in some places to a communal tap and the most striking aspect is many children at the village can often go without being fed. This is where the community’s soup kitchen comes into play.

The kitchen which was recently re-established falls under ward councillor Pete Graham’s jurisdiction.

The kitchen ceased to exist a year ago due to political issues, said Graham. However, through the help of the community and sponsors, he has managed to get the kitchen going again.

“The kitchen was first established by PBO, Mission Thando who left a footprint here, to help the community. We’ve managed to get it going again through the generous donations of the north Durban community. Since we’ve re-established the kitchen it now benefits more than 60 children and the poorest of the community of Khabazela Village,” he explained.

Community leader, Dumile Magaqa, said the kitchen serves between 60 and 80 living in the township.

“We aren’t able to feed the children everyday and our goal would be to get to that stage. Many people in the community and especially the young children rely on us to give back. So having this kitchen is vital for us. If and when we have it we also serve porridge for the children. We are always in need of items for food items like maize meal, pap and porridge. We are grateful for the support from Pete Graham and hope the community of Durban North and surrounds can help us as we are entirely dependent on food donations,” he said.
