21 arrested for drunk driving on M4

The operation held by the station in conjunction with Metro Police has yielded positive results this year with more than 80 people arrested for drunk driving.

A TOTAL of 21 drivers were arrested on Friday evening on the M4 near the Virginia off-ramp during a roadblock held by the Durban North SAPS. The operation held by the station in conjunction with Metro Police has yielded positive results this year with more than 80 people arrested for drunk driving.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said he hoped the arrest would send out a stern warning to drunk drivers.

“We arrested 19 drivers during the roadblock operation while a further two were arrested by the crime prevention team on another section of the M4. Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanour, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice. We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.

Deokaran said police would be holding roadblocks at various points along the M4 throughout the year.
