Standout performances for local couple

The couple won a total of 10 medals collectively with Melisa winning eight medals of the team SA's 18 medals.

THERE aren’t enough superlatives to describe Team South Africa’s and in particular Shaun and Melisa O Neill’s performances at the Down Syndrome World Swimming Championships (DSISO) in Truro, Canada. The couple won a total of 10 medals collectively with Melisa winning eight medals of the team SA’s 18 medals.

What’s more, Melisa won three golds, four silvers and one bronze. She equalled the world record in the 400 metres individual medley and broke two African records in the 100 metres individual medley and 200 metres backstroke in only her second DSISO champs.
The former Golden Hours’ School learner only began swimming four years ago as a way to lose weight.

“I was so pleased with my results but especially for team’s results. I was also proud of my husband. Going to the competition I wanted to win so I’m proud at what I achieved and very proud of the entire team,” she said.

Shaun, who was one of the most vocal participants at the games said he was cheering on everyone, but saved the loudest cheers for his wife, Melisa.

“I kept shouting ‘Go,go,go’ and ‘Go angel, quick, quick, quick’. She told me she heard my screams of encouragement which was great. I’ve been to seven world champs but it is always special representing South Africa. The masters 1 division, which I compete in is very competitive, so I was happy with the two bronze medals,” he said.

Melisa’s mother, Ann van Bosch, said the incredible support from the local community helped the team to succeed.

“Our colours are approved by South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) but we have to source our own funding. The support we’ve received has been phenomenal. Everything from the kit to the team’s bags and swimming equipment was donated. Local organisations like the Umhlanga Round Table and North Durban Lions also helped raise funds for the team.

“It really was amazing. I was ecstatic with Melisa’s performances, I was voiceless by day three of the competition. The encouragement and support from everyone, including the Durban North Neighbours Facebook page was so heartwarming. I just wanted to say a massive thank you from my heart to everyone who shared team news and sent us messages of encouragement,” she said.
