Police vow to crack down on illegal emergency lane users

Durban North SAPS say they will be hosting regular operations during rush hour traffic.

FOUR people were fined for illegally using the emergency lane on the M4 Ruth First Highway on Wednesday morning. Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said Wednesday’s operation was held near the Swapo Road (Broadway) off-ramp during early morning rush hour traffic.

“Our officers were stationed at several positions along the M4 and that seemed to deter motorists from trying to break the law. Four motorists were fined on Wednesday and we’ve issued a warning to repeat offenders that their vehicles will be impounded should they break the law in a similar manner again. It must be said there is a flagrant disregard for the rules of the road, especially when it comes to the use emergency lane to get ahead of traffic,” he said.

Deokaran said more operations specifically targeting the illegal use of the emergency lane were being planned.

“We will continue and intensify our operations by bringing these errant drivers to book. Drivers and owners of these vehicles must be fully aware this type of behaviour is not tolerated as it could endanger other motorists observing the rules of the road,” he said.
