SASSA warns of new card scam

Despite glitches in July, SASSA said grant money would reflect on the new gold card from August 2018.

THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned its beneficiaries of scamsters taking advantage of the agency’s roll-out glitches.

A SASSA spokesman, Senzeni Ngubeni, said social grant beneficiaries were being instructed by the fraudsters to take another bank card instead of the new SASSA card.

“The fraudsters spread wrong information claiming that the SASSA card will not have money at the beginning of August 2018,” said Ngubeni.

He noted that the glitches experienced in July were resolved and that grant money would reflect on the new gold card from August 2018.

How to identify the new SASSA card:
– The SASSA payment card has the South African flag on the left side, Mastercard logo on the right and bears the SASSA insignia at the top.

– Three free cash withdrawals at merchants and one free cash withdrawal per month from the post office.
– One free ATM balance enquiry per month
– All swipes are free of charge and it is Eurocard, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) compliant.

Only a 10 per cent deduction of funeral policies will be allowed on non-child grants endorsed by the grant beneficiary.

Beneficiaries are urged to collect the new card at any SASSA office, post office or pay points before 30 September 2018.
