Dladla takes the reins as new KZNCU President

Bernard Dladla began his administrative career 15 years ago when he was elected onto the executive council of the Umlazi Cricket Club.

FOLLOWING a seven year tenure at the helm of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Fa-eez Jaffar has stepped down and will be replaced by his Vice-President Bernard Dladla following the union’s Annual General Meeting on Friday evening.

Dladla began his administrative career 15 years ago when he was elected onto the executive council of the Umlazi Cricket Club. His career in cricket administration grew steadily as he took up a handful of positions before being elected as the Umlazi Cricket Club member on the Durban and Districts Cricket Union (DDCU).

From 2006, when he started with the DDCU, he moved through the ranks to the position of deputy president and took up a spot on the KZNCU council as the DDCU representative.

In 2013 he was elected to the position of vice-president of the KZNCU behind Jaffar and has held that position ever since.

“Taking over as the president is a daunting task and I have some big boots to fill,” Dladla said. “It is a huge responsibility but it is one that I am ready to take on. Fa-eez and I have had a long chat about the position and I am looking forward to starting. We have a great CEO and there are sound structures in place at the Union, so I am excited by the prospect of leading KZNCU into a new era,” Dladla said.

Outgoing president Jaffar has left the union in a solid position following one of its strongest seasons to date.

“I think we have around 17 to 19 players involved in national set-ups, from the Proteas, the SA ‘A’ team, the ladies’ national team to the national academy and schools’ teams. To be seen as the most improved union by Cricket South Africa last season shows that we are moving in the right direction but there are still areas we can improve on. It has been an interesting journey for me getting everyone to walk the same path, but I have also learnt so much and grown as a person,” Jaffar said.

In other changes to the KZNCU board, Kugen Subrayen and Ravi Padayachee come onto the management committee as non-independent directors while Ernest Shozi and Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize take up positions as independent directors.
