Lad bears his ‘sole’ for the less fortunate

Troy Laventhal, an 11-year-old has started a national shoe drive collecting all kinds of pairs.

WITH just over 160 days before Christmas, a Durban boy has already started making plans on how he can make the day special for the less fortunate.

Troy Laventhal, an 11-year-old has started a national shoe drive collecting all kinds of pairs.
Last week he said it was a school project which motivated him to start the drive. “At school we made a shoe box which we filled with different goodies.

“I always see people begging on the street and some of them don’t even have shoes on. I asked my mom if we could do something about it and that’s how the drive started,” said Laventhal.

Although Laventhal lives in Hillcrest, his appeal showed up on the popular Durban North Neighbours Facebook page. What’s more his mother, Kirsty Neiman works in La Lucia Ridge and donations have been streaming in.

Nieman said, “Troy is a very giving child. Even when we drive around and he sees a beggar, he will give him his food no matter how hungry he is. When he told me about this idea I was taken aback by how sympathetic he is.

“Especially because I always have to force him to wear shoes,” she chuckled. She went on to say they are thankful for the response they’ve been getting.

“So far Troy has collected over 150 pairs of shoes. We are aiming for 1000 pairs before Christmas. We haven’t chosen a charity to donate them to but we have been getting all sizes which is great because then we can donate to more than one shelter,” she said.

Troy’s shoe drive has pick up points in various parts of the country including Gauteng and KZN.

The Durban drop off points are 1 Torsvale Crescent and Waterfall Pets on Inanda Road. Alternatively contact Kirsty on 062 631 3673.
