Police condemn illegal freeway fuel protests

Illegal gatherings and road blockades inconvenience everyone as a few individuals infringe on the rights and freedoms of thousands, said the SAPS.

KWAZULU-Natal police have threatened to arrest members involved in the illegal #fuelpricesmustfall protests which resulted in the blockade of several roads in and around the province on Wednesday. Acting Provincial Commissioner for KZN, Lt general Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said there will be ‘no negotiations for those that break the law’ in the blockade that inconvenienced thousands of motorists in the province.

“People blockading our roads will be immediately arrested and detained. Vehicles used to blockade our roads will be towed and impounded. Those found gathering illegally will be dispersed using the appropriate force that is necessary. We advise those that intend to demonstrate, to do so within the parameters of the law.

“Those that intend to hold any gathering are advised to familiarise themselves with the relevant legislation and ensure that they follow the necessary processes to guarantee that their activities are legal. If the organisers of such demonstrations follow due processes, proper planning can be done and the citizens of this province can be informed in advance of possible disruptions to their routines,” Mkhwanazi said.

The 10 people arrested during the road blockade on the N3 will be appearing at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today (19 July) on charges of public violence.
