Save three lives this Mandela Day

Each unit a donor gives can be divided into the three primary components — red blood cells, plasma, and platelets — saving up to three lives.

THE SOUTH African National Blood Service (SANBS) has called on residents to do their bit in support of Mandela Day on Wednesday, 18 July. The service has reminded residents that by donating, they could potentially save three lives.

Each unit a donor gives can be divided into the three primary components — red blood cells, plasma, and platelets — saving up to three lives.

The message is no different at the Durban North Blood Donor Clinic which will be hosting a drive at their Kensington Square offices as well a mobile clinic at Grace Church uMhlanga.

Dennis Ngongoma of the service said they were aiming at collecting 67 units of blood in keeping with the 67 years of

Nelson Mandela’s life that he gave to social justice – to volunteering and community service.

“By donating a unit of blood every eight weeks, blood donors are able to live up to the ideal of Mandela Day by performing voluntary service throughout the year. We are encouraging donors to support our blood drives on the day to give back and save lives,” he said.
