Three arrested after Durban North shootout

Several implements used in theft of motor vehicle crimes were found in the vehicle.

THREE suspects have been arrested after a shootout in Russell Place in Durban North on Friday night. The suspects, believed to be part of a gang, were in the process of stealing a bakkie when they were confronted by an armed security officer on patrol.

According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the gang of five were trying to steal a Toyota Fortuna.

“As the reaction officer approached the scene, the suspects alighted from the vehicle firing multiple shots at the officer who returned fire, striking two of the armed men. The suspects jumped into a Toyota Etios getaway vehicle and attempted to flee when they were stopped by our officer.

“All five of the suspects then fled on foot attempting to evade arrest, one man was apprehended on scene. With the assistance of the SAPS K9 unit, a search of the surrounding area was conducted resulting in the K9 officer apprehending two men. Two other suspects remain at large. Two of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds and dog bites and were treated and attended to on scene by Crisis Medical Paramedics,” van Reenen explained.

The vehicle, used by the gang, was found to be stolen and several implements used in theft of motor vehicle crimes were found in the vehicle.

The arrest and subsequent shootout comes days after Durban North SAPS warned of a spike in car thefts in the area.

The incident also comes a week after three suspects believed to be part of a gang targeting Ford Rangers were arrested in another shootout in Durban.
